Philodendron
Philodendron,
Philodendron is a large genus of tropical flowering plants native to Central and South America. They are popular for their ease of care and diverse foliage, which can be glossy green, velvety, or highly structured. The genus is split into two main types: Vining/Climbing (like the Heart-leaf P.) and Upright/Self-Heading (like P. selloum). They are often confused with Monsteras. They rarely flower indoors. Popular cultivated varieties include Philodendron hederaceum, P. 'Birkin', and P. micans.
Care Guide
LIGHT
- Prefers medium to bright, indirect light. East or West-facing window is ideal.
- All-green vining types (Heart-leaf) tolerate low light well, but growth will be sparse.
- Upright and variegated types need brighter light to maintain compact shape and color.
- Avoid direct, harsh sun, which can burn the leaves.
WATER
- Prefers the soil to dry out mostly between waterings.
- Allow the top two-thirds of the soil to dry before soaking thoroughly.
- Overwatering causes yellow leaves and root rot.
- Underwatering causes the leaves to curl inward and become crispy.
- Reduce watering in the winter.
SOIL
- Needs a rich, airy, and well-draining potting mix.
- A blend of standard potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir provides the necessary balance of aeration and moisture retention.
GROWTH HABIT
- Ideal conditions: Warm temperatures (65-80F) and moderate to high humidity.
- Growth rate & size: Growth rate is fast to moderate. Vining types trail or climb many feet; Upright types grow as bushy shrubs.
PROPAGATING
- Propagates extremely easily from stem cuttings with at least one node.
- Root cuttings in water, moist sphagnum moss, or directly in soil.
- Best done in spring or summer.
PRUNING
- Pruning is essential for vining types to encourage bushy growth. Pinch or cut back leggy stems.
- Upright types require minimal pruning, primarily to remove old, yellowed, or damaged leaves at the base.
- Vining types need to be pruned regularly to prevent them from becoming too sparse.
REPOTTING
- Repot when the plant is root-bound, typically every 1-2 years due to its fast growth.
- Repot in spring or early summer.
- Vining types can be repotted into the same size pot after trimming roots and vines to refresh the soil.
FERTILIZING
- Feed regularly during the spring and summer growing season (monthly).
- Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.
FLOWERING
- Produces an inconspicuous spathe-and-spadix flower (similar to a Peace Lily).
- Extremely rare on indoor specimens, as it needs to reach climbing maturity to flower.
TOXICITY
- Toxic to humans and pets. Contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause oral pain, swelling, and vomiting if chewed or ingested.
PRO TIPS
- Vining types benefit greatly from moss poles or trellises for support and larger leaf size.
- If the leaves are yellowing with brown tips, it's usually overwatering. If they are brown and crispy, it's usually underwatering or low humidity.
- Wipe large leaves to keep them glossy and maximize light.
Variability in Care
Most varieties of this plant follow the standard care above, but some require adjustments.
Vining/Trailing Types
Examples: Philodendron hederaceum (Heart-leaf), P. micans (Velvet-leaf)
- The Heart-leaf is one of the hardiest and most low-light tolerant houseplants.
- Velvet-leaf needs higher humidity to prevent the delicate texture from crisping.
Upright/Self-Heading Types
Examples: Philodendron 'Birkin', P. 'Prince of Orange', P. selloum (Tree Philodendron)
- Grow in a bushy, non-vining clump and require more horizontal space.
- Need brighter light to maintain their compact, non-stretching form.
- 'Birkin' (variegated) needs the brightest light to maintain its white pinstripes.
Velvet/Textured Types
Examples: Philodendron melanochrysum, P. gloriosum
- These highly sought-after collector types require extremely high humidity (60%+ is mandatory) and are highly sensitive to low moisture.
- The leaves should not be misted as water can damage the velvety surface.
