Light
-
Bright, indirect light is best — it loves lots of light, but harsh direct sun can scorch the variegation.
-
Outdoors, it thrives in partial shade to filtered sunlight.
-
Indoors, place it near a bright east or west window.
-
If light is too low, you’ll notice duller leaves and slower growth.
Water
-
Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy.
-
Water when the top inch (2–3 cm) feels dry.
-
In summer, it may need water more often; in winter, reduce frequency a bit.
-
They appreciate humid conditions, so mist occasionally or place on a pebble tray with water.
Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives in warm temps (65–85°F / 18–29°C) — tropical comfort zone!
-
Protect from temps below 55°F (13°C) — it’s not frost-tolerant.
-
Loves high humidity (60%+). Indoors, a humidifier nearby works wonders.
Soil & Pot
-
Use a rich, well-draining mix — something like:
1 part potting soil + 1 part peat/coco coir + 1 part perlite or bark. -
Always make sure the pot has good drainage holes.
-
Outdoors, plant in fertile, loamy soil that stays evenly moist.
Feeding
-
Feed every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength).
-
Stop feeding in winter when growth slows down.
-
A little organic compost in spring also gives it a nice boost.
Maintenance & Pruning
-
Remove yellow or damaged leaves regularly to keep it neat.
-
You can cut old stems down to the base after flowering — new shoots will grow from the rhizomes.
-
Wipe the leaves occasionally to keep that variegation bright and shiny.
Bonus: Flowering
-
When happy, it produces fragrant pink-and-white shell-like flowers — usually in summer.
-
Indoors, it might not flower, but those leaves are gorgeous enough on their own!
Common Issues
-
Brown leaf tips: Usually from dry air or underwatering.
-
Dull color or slow growth: Often needs more light or fertilizer.
-
Leaves yellowing at the base: Could mean the plant’s too wet or the pot needs better drainage.
