String of Hearts Variegated Hanging Basket 6"
String of Hearts Variegated Hanging Basket 6"
Light:
• Prefers bright, indirect sunlight. A south or east-facing window is ideal.
• Can tolerate some direct sunlight in the morning but avoid harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
• If the plant starts to stretch or lose its vibrant color, it may need more light.
Watering:
• Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. String of Hearts is drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings.
• During the growing season (spring and summer), water every 1-2 weeks. In fall and winter, reduce watering, allowing the plant to go drier for longer periods.
• Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining succulent or cactus mix. You can also make your own by combining regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.
• Good drainage is essential to prevent overwatering.
Humidity:
• String of Hearts prefers average humidity levels (around 30-50%).
• They can tolerate lower humidity but may benefit from occasional misting, especially in dry environments.
Temperature:
• Thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 80°F.
• Protect from temperatures below 50°F as cold drafts can damage the plant.
Fertilizer:
• Feed with a diluted liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer) every 4-6 weeks.
• No need to fertilize in fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
Pruning:
• Prune as needed to control growth and encourage bushier growth. Pinching back leggy vines will promote branching.
• Remove any yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant healthy.
Propagation:
• Easily propagated through leaf or stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or directly in soil. Roots should develop in a few weeks.
• You can also propagate by planting the vines that touch the soil.
Pests:
• Generally pest-resistant, but keep an eye out for mealybugs and spider mites.
• If you notice any pests, treat them with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Extra Tips:
• Support: Use a trellis or allow it to trail from a hanging basket to showcase its lovely vines.
• Dusting: Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust and improve photosynthesis.
