Light Requirements
• String of Hearts loves bright, indirect light. Place it near a window where it can get plenty of filtered sunlight.
• It can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, which can enhance the color and variegation of its leaves. However, avoid harsh afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
• Water sparingly, as this plant is semi-succulent and stores water in its leaves and stems. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings.
• During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently but always ensure the soil is dry before the next watering. In the winter, reduce watering even further.
Soil
• Use a well-draining potting mix, preferably a cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or sand to regular potting soil can help improve drainage.
• Avoid heavy, moisture-retentive soils, as they can lead to root rot.
Humidity and Temperature
• String of Hearts does well in average indoor humidity but can tolerate low humidity thanks to its semi-succulent nature.
• It prefers temperatures between 65-80°F. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F, as it is not frost-tolerant.
Fertilizing
• Feed the plant with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Avoid over-fertilizing and stop fertilizing altogether during the fall and winter when growth slows.
Pruning and Propagation
• Trim back leggy vines or any discolored leaves to encourage fuller growth. Pruning can also help maintain its shape and prevent it from becoming too long.
• String of Hearts is easy to propagate. Simply cut a healthy vine and place the cut end in water or soil, where it will root and start growing.
Pot and Repotting
• Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom, as the roots are prone to rot.
• Repotting is typically only needed every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. When repotting, choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid too much excess soil, which can hold moisture.
Pests and Issues
• String of Hearts is generally resistant to pests, but it may occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Check the leaves regularly, especially where they meet the stems.
• If you spot pests, treat with insecticidal soap or wipe down the affected areas with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.
