Size

The plant photos shown are our stock images used to represent the general appearance, size, and quality of the plant you’ll receive. Please remember that each plant is unique—natural variations in color, shape, and size are completely normal!

Light

  • Full sun is best — at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Can tolerate partial shade, but growth may slow, and pads may become elongated.

Temperature

  • Prefers warm, dry climates. Ideal: 70–100°F (21–38°C) during the day.

  • Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to ~20–25°F (-6 to -4°C) depending on the species.

  • Protect from frost or prolonged cold, especially potted specimens.

Watering

  • Succulent watering: allow soil to dry completely between waterings.

  • During growing season (spring–summer): water deeply but infrequently.

  • Winter: minimal watering; only if the pads start to shrivel.

Soil

  • Well-draining cactus or succulent mix is essential.

  • Can improve drainage by adding sand, perlite, or pumice to standard potting soil.

Fertilizer

  • Feed during the growing season with a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer.

  • Avoid fertilizing in fall/winter when growth slows.

Potting & Repotting

  • Choose a pot with drainage holes.

  • Repot every 2–3 years, or when roots outgrow the container.

  • Use gloves and/or tongs to handle due to spines.

Pruning

  • Remove damaged or diseased pads with sterile tools.

  • Can also thin pads for shape or to encourage new growth.

Propagation

  • Easily propagated from pads: let cut pads callous for a few days before planting in dry soil.

  • Keep soil lightly moist until roots form.

Pests & Problems

  • Watch for mealybugs, scale, and spider mites.

  • Root rot can occur if overwatered or in poorly draining soil.

  • Sunburn can happen if moved suddenly from shade to intense sun.

Extra Tips

  • Wear gloves when handling — spines and tiny glochids can be irritating.

  • Can bloom colorful flowers in summer if mature and conditions are good.

  • Keep indoor prickly pears near the sunniest window possible.
