Light
-
Place in bright, indirect sunlight for at least 6 hours a day.
-
Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves, and low-light spots, which cause leaf drop.
Temperature
-
Keep between 65–75°F (18–24°C) during the day.
-
Avoid cold drafts, heat vents, and sudden temperature drops.
-
Night temps below 55°F (13°C) can damage the plant.
Watering
-
Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
-
Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, but never let the pot sit in water.
-
Overwatering is the most common cause of leaf loss.
Humidity
-
Prefers moderate humidity.
-
If indoor air is dry (especially in winter), you can mist lightly or place the pot on a pebble tray with water (without touching the roots to the water).
Soil
-
Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a standard indoor mix with perlite or sand added for drainage.
Feeding
-
While blooming, feeding isn’t necessary.
-
After the holidays, once growth resumes in spring, feed monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer (10-10-10 or 20-20-20).
Pruning & Reblooming
-
After blooming, cut back the plant in late winter or early spring to about 6–8 inches tall.
-
Move outdoors in warm weather and continue care.
-
To rebloom for the holidays, starting around early October, give the plant 14 hours of complete darkness each night and bright light by day for 6–8 weeks. This triggers the colorful bracts.
Common Problems
-
Leaf drop: Too cold, too dark, or overwatered.
-
Wilting: Underwatering or root rot.
-
Pests: Watch for whiteflies, spider mites, and aphids.
