Light:
• Ideal: Bright, indirect light.
• Tolerable: Low light, but growth may slow, and leaves may become smaller. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
• Water when the top 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) of soil feels dry. Stick your finger into the soil to check for dryness.
• Overwatering can lead to root rot. Ensure proper drainage and avoid waterlogged soil.
• Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant’s growth slows.
Humidity:
• Prefers moderate to high humidity (60% or more), but it can adapt to average household humidity.
• Consider misting the plant occasionally, using a humidity tray, or placing it near a humidifier to maintain humidity levels.
Temperature:
• Ideal temperature range is 65-80°F. It doesn’t tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 55°F
Soil:
• Use well-draining potting soil, such as a mix for aroids or a mixture of peat, perlite, and orchid bark. This ensures adequate airflow and drainage around the roots.
Fertilizing:
• Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (like 20-20-20) every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Skip fertilization in fall and winter.
Pruning:
• Prune to control its size and shape, or remove yellow or dead leaves. This promotes healthy growth.
• Philodendrons are climbers, so you can train the plant with a support (like a moss pole).
Repotting:
• Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger in diameter.
Pests:
• Watch out for common houseplant pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if needed.
Toxicity:
• Toxic to pets and humans if ingested, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
