Light
-
Prefers full sun to bright light.
-
Indoors: place in the brightest window (south or west).
-
More sun enhances the red edging and bold coloration.
Water
-
Allow soil to dry completely before watering.
-
Water deeply, then drain thoroughly.
-
Water very sparingly in winter.
-
Soft or yellowing leaves indicate overwatering.
Humidity
-
Prefers low humidity.
-
Do not mist.
Temperature
-
Ideal range: 65–90°F.
-
Can tolerate short dips to about 25–30°F if kept dry, but prolonged cold can damage leaves.
-
Protect from freezing when in pots.
Soil
-
Use gritty, fast-draining succulent/cactus soil.
-
Add extra pumice, perlite, or coarse sand for improved drainage.
Fertilizer
-
Feed once in spring with a diluted cactus fertilizer.
-
No need to fertilize heavily.
Potting & Repotting
-
Use pots with excellent drainage; terracotta is ideal.
-
Repot every 2–3 years or when roots fill the container.
-
Do not use oversized pots — they hold too much moisture.
Common Issues
-
Mushy leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Stretching: Not enough sunlight.
-
Brown spots: Water trapped in the crown or sunburn after sudden light change.
-
Leaf tip browning: Normal aging or underwatering.
