Light
-
Bright light is key!
-
Indoors: Put it in the sunniest window you have (south or west-facing is ideal).
-
Outdoors: Full sun to light afternoon shade is perfect — they love sun but can scorch in extreme heat.
-
-
Without enough light, they get leggy and lose their bright color.
Watering
-
Lemon cypress trees like consistently moist soil, but not soggy.
-
Water when the top ½ inch of soil feels dry.
-
Don’t let it dry out completely — brown, crispy foliage is a sign of thirst.
-
In winter, water a bit less but never let it go bone dry.
-
-
Good drainage is a must! These trees hate “wet feet.”
Temperature & Humidity
-
Ideal temps: 50–75°F (10–24°C).
-
They can tolerate short dips near freezing if outdoors but bring them inside before hard frost hits.
-
Indoors, keep them away from heat vents or drafts — dry air will crisp the foliage.
-
A little humidity (like a pebble tray or misting) helps keep the needles soft and lush.
Feeding
-
Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced, slow-release or liquid fertilizer.
-
Skip fertilizing in fall and winter — they rest during that time.
Pruning & Shaping
-
You can lightly trim to maintain shape, especially if it’s getting tall or bushy.
-
Snip new growth tips — that encourages fuller branching.
-
Avoid heavy pruning into old wood; it may not grow back there.
Repotting
-
Repot every 2–3 years, or when roots start circling the pot.
-
Use a well-draining potting mix, like a blend of potting soil, sand, and perlite.
-
Make sure the pot has drainage holes — these trees hate standing water.
Bonus Tip
If you’re keeping it indoors year-round, it helps to move it outside for the summer. The extra sunlight and airflow make a huge difference in color and overall health.
