-
Nickname: Wax Plant or Hoya wayetii
-
Vibe: Trailing, semi-succulent, tropical
-
Flowers: Star-shaped, usually burgundy and fragrant!
-
Pet-Friendly? Nope – they’re mildly toxic to pets. Keep them out of reach of nibblers!
🪴 Light
Bright, indirect light is the sweet spot. They can handle some direct sun—especially morning rays—but too much harsh light will scorch those pretty leaves. If you notice reddish margins on the leaves, that’s them saying “I love this light!”
-
✅ Happy under a grow light too
-
🚫 Avoid full, all-day sun or dark corners
💧 Water
Think succulent rules: let them dry out a bit!
-
Water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry
-
In winter, cut back – they’re not as thirsty
-
Yellow, mushy leaves = overwatering
-
Wrinkled, soft leaves = underwatering
Tip: Bottom watering works great for hoyas. Let the pot sit in water for 15–20 mins, then drain.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Temp: 60–85°F – keep it cozy
-
Humidity: 40–60% is ideal. More is fine, too!
If the air is dry, especially in winter, a pebble tray or humidifier helps.
🌱 Soil
These babies love well-draining, airy soil. Think chunky!
-
Mix idea: 1 part potting soil + 1 part perlite + 1 part orchid bark
-
Or grab a premade hoya or aroid mix
Drainage is non-negotiable—no soggy roots!
🪴 Potting & Repotting
-
Only repot when rootbound or soil’s breaking down (every 2–3 years)
-
Use a pot with drainage holes
-
Terracotta pots help with moisture control if you’re heavy-handed with water
✂️ Pruning & Propagation
-
Prune to shape or encourage fullness
-
Don’t snip the peduncles (flower stems) – hoyas rebloom from them!
-
Propagate via stem cuttings in water or sphagnum moss
🌸 Flowering Tips
They bloom when:
-
They’re mature (usually after a couple years)
-
Getting enough bright light
-
Not overwatered
-
Slightly rootbound
Be patient! Once they’re comfy, those cute clusters will pop up.
🐛 Pests to Watch For
-
Mealybugs, spider mites, scale, and aphids
-
Wipe leaves with neem oil or insecticidal soap if you spot trouble
🚨 Troubleshooting
| Problem | What’s Going On? | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow leaves | Overwatering | Let soil dry out more between waterings |
| Leaf drop | Too cold or sudden light changes | Keep in stable warmth and light |
| No blooms | Not enough light, too much fertilizer | Move to a brighter spot, ease up on feeding |
🌟 Bonus Care Tips
-
Light fertilizer in spring and summer (like a diluted balanced or orchid fertilizer) every 4–6 weeks
-
Clean those leaves with a damp cloth so they can breathe and photosynthesize happily
