Light
-
Loves lots of bright, direct sunlight — the more sun, the more color!
-
In full sun, the stems turn bright coral, orange, and red.
-
In lower light, it’ll stay greener and may get leggy.
-
Outdoors, it thrives in 6+ hours of sunlight per day.
-
Indoors, place it in the brightest window you have — a south- or west-facing window is perfect.
Too little light = dull color and slow growth.
Water
-
Treat it like a succulent: less is more!
-
Water only when the soil is completely dry — usually every 2–3 weeks in warm months and even less in winter.
-
Make sure the pot drains freely — no sitting water!
-
Overwatering causes root rot and mushy stems.
If you’re unsure, wait a few more days before watering — Firesticks handle drought better than excess moisture.
Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives in 70–90°F (21–32°C).
-
Tolerates short dips down to 50°F (10°C), but frost will damage it.
-
Loves dry air — no need for misting or humidity boosts.
-
If kept outdoors, bring it in before frost or freezing temps.
Soil & Pot
-
Use a very well-draining succulent or cactus mix.
-
You can add extra perlite or coarse sand for even better drainage.
-
Always use a pot with a drainage hole — terracotta pots are ideal.
Feeding
-
Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertilizer.
-
Skip feeding in fall and winter — it rests during the cooler months.
Pruning & Safety
-
You can trim to shape or control size — it responds well to pruning.
-
Important: The milky white sap (latex) is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes — even cause burns for some people.
-
Always wear gloves and eye protection when pruning.
-
Wash hands and tools thoroughly afterward.
-
-
Keep away from pets and kids, as it’s toxic if ingested.
Growth
-
Can grow 3–8 feet tall indoors and up to 20+ feet outdoors in tropical climates!
-
Grows upright and branches as it matures. You can stake it if it leans while young.
Common Issues
-
Shriveled stems: Underwatering or too much heat.
-
Soft, mushy stems: Overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Faded color: Not enough light — move it to a sunnier spot.
-
White sap leaks: Normal after pruning, just handle carefully.
