Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light.
-
Can tolerate some direct sunlight, especially morning sun, which can enhance leaf color.
-
Avoid low-light conditions; growth slows and leaves may lose vibrancy.
Temperature
-
Thrives in 60–75°F (15–24°C).
-
Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and sudden drafts.
Humidity
-
Prefers moderate humidity, but tolerates normal indoor levels.
-
If the air is very dry, leaf edges may brown; occasional misting helps.
Watering
-
Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
-
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
-
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
-
Avoid letting the plant sit in standing water.
Soil
-
Use a well-draining potting mix, such as a mix of peat, pine bark, and perlite.
-
Good drainage prevents root rot, which is the most common issue.
Fertilizer
-
Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.
-
Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
Potting
-
Use a pot with drainage holes.
-
Repot every 2–3 years or when roots outgrow the container.
-
Slightly snug pots help encourage root growth.
Pruning & Cleaning
-
Remove yellow or damaged leaves.
-
Prune to maintain shape or control size.
-
Wipe leaves occasionally to remove dust; this helps the plant absorb light efficiently.
Propagation
-
Propagate through stem cuttings in water or soil.
-
Include at least one leaf and a node for rooting.
Pests & Problems
-
Watch for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale.
-
Leaf drop: often caused by overwatering, sudden changes in light, or stress from moving.
-
Brown leaf edges: usually low humidity or inconsistent watering.
