Caring for a bonsai tree requires attention to watering, pruning, repotting, and placement. Here are the key aspects:
1. Watering
Check soil moisture daily- bonsai should never dry out completely.
- Water thoroughly when the topsoil feels slightly dry.
- Use a gentle watering method (watering can or misting) to avoid washing away soil.
- Avoid overwatering; ensure proper drainage.
2. Light & Placement
- Indoor bonsai (e.g., Ficus, Jade) need bright, indirect light- place near a sunny window.
- Rotate the tree occasionally for even growth.
3. Pruning & Shaping
- Maintenance pruning keeps the tree small and promotes branch growth. Trim new shoots back to maintain shape.
- Structural pruning (major cuts) should be done during the dormant season.
- Use sharp bonsai scissors to avoid damage.
4. Soil & Repotting
- Use a well-draining bonsai soil mix (akadama, pumice, lava rock).
- Repot every 2-5 years (depending on species) to refresh soil and trim roots.
- Repot in early spring before new growth starts.
5. Fertilizing
- Feed with a balanced liquid or slow-release bonsai fertilizer during the growing season (spring-fall).
- Reduce or stop fertilizing in winter.
6. Humidity & Temperature
- Bonsai thrive in higher humidity; use a humidity tray if indoors.
- Keep away from heating vents, AC units, and cold drafts.
