Light
-
Medium to bright indirect light is ideal, but it’s super tolerant of low light too.
-
It can even handle fluorescent lighting, so it’s perfect for offices or dim corners.
-
Avoid harsh direct sunlight, especially through glass — it can scorch those shiny leaves.
Watering
-
The ZZ’s golden rule: less is more!
-
Water when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry (every 2–3 weeks is typical).
-
Always let excess water drain out — soggy soil leads to root rot fast.
-
-
In winter, stretch out the watering even more.
(If you’re unsure, it’s safer to underwater than overwater!)
Temperature & Humidity
-
Loves average indoor temps — 65–85°F (18–29°C).
-
Normal household humidity is just fine; no misting needed.
-
Keep it away from cold drafts, heaters, or AC vents.
Feeding
-
ZZs don’t need much food!
-
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer (half strength) once a month in spring and summer.
-
No fertilizer needed in fall or winter.
-
Soil & Repotting
-
Use a well-draining mix — cactus or succulent soil works great.
-
Repot every 2–3 years, or when the rhizomes start bulging against the pot.
-
Choose a pot with good drainage holes.
