Lipstick Plant 4"

Lipstick Plant 4"

Light:

Bright, indirect light is best for the Lipstick plant. Place it near an east- or north-facing window, or use artificial grow lights if natural light is limited.

Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves, but also make sure it gets enough light to bloom.

Watering:

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Lipstick plants like evenly moist soil but dislike sitting in water, which can lead to root rot.

Water thoroughly, letting the water drain from the bottom of the pot. Reduce watering in the winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

Do not let the soil dry out completely, especially during the growing season.

Humidity:

High humidity is important for Lipstick plants. Aim for humidity levels around 50% or higher.

Mist the plant regularly, use a humidity tray, or place it near a humidifier, especially in dry indoor conditions or during winter months.

Temperature:

Keep your Lipstick plant in temperatures between 65°F and 80°F.

Avoid cold drafts or sudden temperature drops below 60°F, which can cause stress and slow growth.

Soil:

Use a well-draining, lightweight potting mix. A mix designed for epiphytes or houseplants with added perlite, orchid bark, or sand will improve drainage.

Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation at the roots.

Fertilizer:

Feed your Lipstick plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks.

Stop fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Pruning:

Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and remove leggy stems. Trim the plant after flowering to encourage new growth and future blooms.

Pinching back new growth also helps to maintain a compact, fuller shape.

Repotting:

Repot the Lipstick plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Choose a pot that is slightly larger and refresh the potting mix during repotting.

Spring is the best time to repot.

Encouraging Blooms:

To promote blooming, ensure the plant gets bright, indirect light and high humidity. Regular pruning after flowering will also help it produce more flowers.

Avoid moving the plant frequently, as changes in environment can cause stress and flower drop.

Pest Control:

Lipstick plants can occasionally attract aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites. Regularly inspect the plant, especially the undersides of leaves.

If pests are spotted, treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

General Maintenance:

Rotate the plant every few weeks to promote even growth, as it tends to lean toward the light.

Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust, which can hinder the plant’s ability to absorb light.
