Syngonium

Syngonium podophyllum,Arrowhead Plant, Arrowhead Vine, Goosefoot Plant

Syngonium is a popular tropical evergreen vine native to Central and South America. It is characterized by its dynamic leaf shape, which changes dramatically as the plant matures, starting as simple arrowhead (or goosefoot) leaves and developing into multi-lobed structures. It is grown for its wide range of foliage colors, including various shades of green, pink, cream, and red, often with striking variegation. It can be grown as a bushy tabletop plant, a trailing vine, or a climber. It rarely flowers indoors. Popular cultivated varieties include 'White Butterfly', 'Neon Robusta', and 'Pink Splash'.

Care Guide

LIGHT

  • Prefers medium to bright, indirect light for best color retention and compact growth.
  • East or West-facing windows are ideal.
  • Insufficient light causes stretching (legginess) and variegation (pink, white) to fade to green.
  • Avoid direct, harsh sun, which will bleach and burn the delicate leaves.

WATER

  • Prefers the soil to dry out mostly between waterings.
  • Allow the top one-third of the soil to dry out completely before soaking thoroughly.
  • Overwatering causes yellowing leaves, especially the lower ones, and root rot.
  • Underwatering causes the leaves to droop dramatically and become crispy.

SOIL

  • Needs a rich, airy, and well-draining potting mix.
  • A blend of standard potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark or coco coir provides good aeration, which is vital for its roots.

GROWTH HABIT

  • Ideal conditions: High humidity (50%+) and warm temperatures (65-80F).
  • Growth rate & size: Growth rate is fast. It can be kept bushy by pruning or allowed to vine and climb many feet.

PROPAGATING

  • Propagates extremely easily from stem cuttings with at least one node and one aerial root.
  • Root cuttings readily in water, moist sphagnum moss, or directly in soil.
  • Best done in spring or summer.

PRUNING

  • Pruning is essential to control shape and prevent legginess.
  • Pinch or cut back the long vining stems to encourage the plant to branch out and remain full and bushy.
  • Remove old, damaged, or yellowed leaves.

REPOTTING

  • Repot when the plant is root-bound, typically every 1-2 years due to its fast growth.
  • Repot in spring or early summer.
  • When repotting, use the opportunity to prune leggy stems and replant them on top of the soil for a fuller pot.

FERTILIZING

  • Feed regularly during the spring and summer growing season (monthly).
  • Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
  • Stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.

FLOWERING

  • Produces an inconspicuous spathe-and-spadix flower (similar to a Peace Lily).
  • Extremely rare on indoor specimens, as it needs to reach mature, climbing size to flower.

TOXICITY

  • Toxic to humans and pets. Contains insoluble calcium oxalates, which cause oral pain, swelling, and vomiting if chewed or ingested.

PRO TIPS

  • High humidity helps prevent brown leaf tips and encourages faster, more vigorous growth.
  • To keep it bushy, do not provide a pole; let it trail or prune it heavily.
  • The mature leaf shape (highly lobed) is only achieved when the plant is allowed to climb a moss pole or trellis.

Variability in Care

Most varieties of this plant follow the standard care above, but some require adjustments.

Green/Less Variegated Types

Examples: Syngonium podophyllum 'Robusta'

  • These are the hardiest types and the most tolerant of low light conditions.
  • Growth rate is often the fastest.

Pink/Colored Cultivars

Examples: Syngonium 'Neon Robusta', S. 'Pink Splash'

  • Require the brightest indirect light to maintain their vibrant pink, red, or cream coloration.
  • The colored parts lack chlorophyll, making these types slower growing and less tolerant of low light.

White/Heavy Variegation

Examples: Syngonium 'White Butterfly', S. 'Trileaf Wonder'

  • The white areas are prone to browning if the humidity is too low or if they receive too much direct sun.
  • Best maintained in high, stable humidity and consistent bright, indirect light.
