Staghorn Fern 6”

Staghorn Fern 6”

Light:

Bright, Indirect Light: Staghorn Ferns thrive in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the fronds. They can tolerate lower light but will grow more slowly.

Watering:

Frequent, But Moderate Watering: Water Staghorn Ferns regularly, allowing them to dry slightly between waterings. Depending on your climate, this could mean watering once a week or more in warmer months. In cooler months, reduce watering. If mounted on wood or in a basket, you can soak the entire plant for about 15-20 minutes and let it drip dry. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.

Humidity:

High Humidity: Staghorn Ferns thrive in high humidity, ideally 60-80%. You can increase humidity by misting the plant regularly or placing it in a naturally humid room like a bathroom or kitchen. A humidity tray or humidifier can also help in dry environments.

Temperature:

Warm Temperatures: Ideal temperatures for a Staghorn Fern range from 60°F to 80°F. They are sensitive to cold and should be kept away from drafts and temperatures below 50°F.

Mounting and Potting:

Mounted on Wood or Grown in Hanging Baskets: Staghorn Ferns are typically mounted on a wooden plaque or grown in hanging baskets to mimic their natural habitat (growing on tree trunks). If you grow them in a pot, use a well-draining, loose mix such as sphagnum moss or orchid bark.

Fertilization:

Balanced Fertilizer: Feed your Staghorn Fern with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every month during the growing season (spring and summer). Apply the fertilizer to the soil or moss around the base of the plant. Reduce or stop fertilization in the fall and winter.

Fronds:

Shield Fronds and Fertile Fronds: Staghorn Ferns have two types of fronds:

Shield Fronds: These round, flat fronds protect the roots and should not be removed, even if they turn brown. They collect moisture and nutrients.

Fertile Fronds: These are the antler-like fronds that give the plant its name. They are green and upright, and sometimes produce spores.

Pests:

Monitor for Pests: Staghorn Ferns can be susceptible to pests like scale insects and mealybugs. Treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Additional Tips:

Air Circulation: Ensure there’s good air circulation around your Staghorn Fern, as they prefer fresh, moving air.

Dusting: Gently wipe or mist the fronds to remove dust and keep them healthy.
