Pothos Golden 6”
Pothos Golden 6”
Light:
• Bright, indirect light is ideal for Golden Pothos, which will help maintain its vibrant variegation. However, it is highly adaptable and can tolerate low-light conditions, though the leaves may lose some of their variegation in dimmer light.
• Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and lead to browning.
Watering:
• Water the plant when the top 2 inches of soil feel dry. Golden Pothos prefers to dry out between waterings.
• Water thoroughly until water runs out of the drainage holes, but make sure to empty the saucer to avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
Humidity:
• Golden Pothos is adaptable to average household humidity but prefers moderate humidity (40-60%).
• If you live in a dry environment, you can mist the plant occasionally, but this is generally not necessary.
Temperature:
• This plant thrives in temperatures between 60°F and 85°F. It doesn’t tolerate cold temperatures well, so avoid exposing it to anything below 50°F
• Keep it away from cold drafts or direct heat sources like radiators or air conditioners.
Soil:
• Golden Pothos does well in a well-draining, all-purpose potting mix. A mix designed for houseplants with added perlite or sand for extra drainage works well.
• Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent the soil from becoming too soggy.
Fertilizer:
• Feed your Golden Pothos during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month.
• Fertilizing is less important in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.
Pruning:
• Regular pruning helps maintain the shape and encourages fuller growth. You can trim back any leggy, overgrown vines or remove any yellowing or dead leaves.
• Pruning will also encourage the plant to branch out and grow bushier.
Repotting:
• Repot your Golden Pothos every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. It prefers to be slightly root-bound but will benefit from fresh soil.
• Choose a pot that is 1-2 inches larger than the current one, and make sure it has drainage holes.
Pest Control:
• Golden Pothos is generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract spider mites, mealybugs, or scale.
• Regularly inspect the plant, especially under the leaves, and treat any pests with neem oil or insecticidal soap if necessary.
Common Issues:
• Yellowing leaves: This can be a sign of overwatering. Make sure the plant isn’t sitting in water and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
• Brown leaf tips: This is often caused by low humidity or underwatering. Increase humidity or water more consistently.
• Leggy growth: If the plant starts growing long, sparse vines with fewer leaves, it may not be getting enough light. Move it to a brighter location with indirect light.
Propagation:
• Golden Pothos is easy to propagate via stem cuttings. Cut a vine just below a node (where a leaf meets the stem) and place the cutting in water or directly in soil.
• If rooting in water, change the water every few days. Once the roots are 2-3 inches long, you can plant the cutting in soil.
Trailing or Climbing:
• Golden Pothos can be grown as a trailing plant in hanging baskets or placed on a shelf, or you can encourage it to climb by providing a trellis or moss pole.
• If allowed to climb, the leaves may grow larger, and the plant may develop a more vigorous growth habit.
General Tips:
• Rotate the plant periodically to ensure even growth and prevent it from leaning toward the light.
• Clean the leaves regularly to remove dust, which will improve its ability to photosynthesize.
