Light
• Monstera thrives in bright, indirect light. It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth will slow, and the leaves may develop fewer splits and holes (fenestrations).
• Avoid direct sunlight, as it can burn the leaves.
Watering
• Water when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry. This typically means watering once a week, but it depends on your home’s conditions.
• Monstera prefers moist (not soggy) soil, so avoid overwatering. Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting in the soil.
• In winter, water less frequently as the plant’s growth slows down.
Humidity
• Monstera thrives in moderate to high humidity. If the air in your home is dry, consider misting the plant regularly or placing it near a humidifier.
• Higher humidity levels will also encourage more fenestration (holes) in the leaves.
Temperature
• The ideal temperature for Monstera is between 65–85°F. Avoid exposing it to temperatures below 50°F
• Keep the plant away from cold drafts or heating vents, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.
Soil
• Use a well-draining potting mix. A good mix includes peat-based potting soil combined with perlite or orchid bark to improve aeration and drainage.
• Ensure the pot has proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.
Fertilizing
• During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize once a month with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
• In fall and winter, reduce or stop fertilizing, as the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning
• Prune to remove dead or yellowing leaves or to control the size of the plant.
• You can also trim aerial roots if they become unruly, although they help the plant stabilize itself when climbing.
Repotting
• Monstera should be repotted every 1-2 years as it grows. Choose a pot that’s slightly larger than the current one.
• Repotting in fresh soil helps prevent the plant from becoming root-bound, which can stunt growth.
Support
• Monstera deliciosa is a climbing plant and can benefit from a moss pole or trellis for support as it grows larger.
• Its aerial roots naturally cling to surfaces, so offering something to climb will help the plant grow upright and stay healthy.
Pest Control
• Monstera is generally resistant to pests but can occasionally attract spider mites, scale, or mealybugs. Inspect the plant regularly, and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
Propagation
• Monstera can be easily propagated by stem cuttings. Take a cutting with a node (where a leaf or aerial root grows), and place it in water or directly into soil. It will root and grow into a new plant.
Signs of Stress
• Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, while crispy brown edges often signal underwatering or low humidity.
• Drooping leaves may result from improper watering, either too much or too little.
• Small or non-fenestrated leaves can mean the plant isn’t getting enough light.
