Light

Prayer plants thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light levels but grow best in filtered light.

Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves and cause fading of the leaf patterns.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, typically every 1–2 weeks.

Use filtered or distilled water, as Marantas are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, particularly fluoride and chlorine.

Reduce watering in the winter months, but do not let the soil dry out completely.

Humidity

Prayer plants love high humidity. Aim for 50% or more humidity, which can be achieved by:

Misting the plant regularly.

Using a humidifier.

Placing the plant on a pebble tray with water.

In dry environments, brown leaf tips can be a sign of low humidity.

Temperature

Ideal temperatures are between 65–75°F. Avoid drafts, cold air, or temperatures below 55°F  as this can stress the plant and cause leaf damage.

Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture. A good mix includes regular potting soil with added perlite or peat moss to improve drainage and aeration.

Fertilizing

Fertilize during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer once a month.

Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause leaf burn. Stop feeding in fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.

 Pruning

Prune yellow or dead leaves to keep the plant looking healthy. You can also trim leggy growth to encourage bushier growth.

Removing spent or dying leaves helps redirect the plant’s energy to new growth.

Repotting

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Use a container with drainage holes and fresh soil to promote healthy root growth.

Prayer plants like being slightly root-bound, so choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one.

Pest Control

While relatively pest-resistant, Prayer Plants can sometimes attract spider mites, mealybugs, or aphids. Inspect the plant regularly, and treat infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Signs of Stress

Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering, while curling leaves often point to underwatering or low humidity.

Brown tips or edges usually signal low humidity or water quality issues (e.g., fluoride in tap water).

Leggy growth could mean the plant isn’t receiving enough light.

Leaf Movement

One of the unique features of Prayer Plants is their nyctinasty—the movement of leaves in response to light changes. Leaves will fold up at night and open in the morning. If the plant isn’t folding its leaves, it might be under stress from improper light, humidity, or watering.
