LIGHT
-
Prefers medium to bright indirect light.
-
Tolerates some lower light but grows leggier.
-
Avoid direct sun—fronds scorch easily.
WATER
-
Keep soil evenly moist, never soggy.
-
Water when the top 1 inch feels slightly dry.
-
This fern is a bit more drought-tolerant than others but still dislikes drying out fully.
SOIL
-
Best in a loose, airy, fast-draining mix:
-
peat or coco coir
-
perlite
-
orchid bark
-
-
Avoid compact or heavy soils.
HUMIDITY
-
Prefers 50–70% humidity.
-
Can tolerate average home humidity better than many ferns, but brown edges mean it wants more moisture in the air.
TEMPERATURE
-
Ideal range: 60–80°F (16–27°C).
-
Keep away from drafts, AC vents, or cold windows.
GROWTH HABIT
-
Soft, blue-green, wavy fronds with a powdery texture.
-
Grows from creeping rhizomes that may appear on the soil surface.
-
Moderate grower; typically reaches 1–2 feet wide.
PROPAGATION
-
Best by division of the rhizomes during repotting.
-
Spore propagation is possible but difficult for home growers.
PRUNING & REPOTTING
-
Remove yellow or damaged fronds at the base.
-
Repot every 1–2 years or when rhizomes spill over the pot.
-
Use a shallow, wide pot to accommodate spreading rhizomes.
FERTILIZING
-
Feed every 4–6 weeks in spring and summer.
-
Use a diluted balanced fertilizer (¼–½ strength).
-
Avoid heavy feeding—roots are sensitive.
TOXICITY
-
Non-toxic to pets and humans.
PRO TIPS
-
Allow rhizomes to breathe—don’t bury them.
-
Slightly blue coloration fades in low light; brighter indirect light keeps the color vibrant.
-
Water with filtered or distilled water if you notice leaf spotting from minerals.
