Calathea Corona 6"

Calathea Corona 6"

The Calathea Corona (Calathea roseopicta 'Corona') is known for its striking, large leaves with light green or white centers and dark green borders. Like most calatheas, it’s a bit more demanding when it comes to care but can thrive with the right conditions. Here’s a detailed guide to help you care for your Calathea Corona:

Light Requirements
- Ideal: Bright, indirect light. It prefers filtered light, similar to what it would receive on the forest floor.
- Tolerable: Can adapt to lower light, but growth may slow, and the vibrant leaf patterns may fade.
- Avoid: Direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate leaves and cause brown patches.

Watering
- Frequency: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
- Method: Water thoroughly, allowing excess water to drain from the bottom of the pot.
- Tip: Use room-temperature, filtered, or distilled water if possible, as calatheas are sensitive to salts and chemicals often found in tap water.

Humidity
- Ideal: High humidity (60% or higher).
- Tips:
- Use a humidifier or place the plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water to increase humidity.
- Misting the plant occasionally can help, but ensure the leaves aren’t constantly wet to avoid fungal issues.

Temperature
- Ideal range: 65-80°F (18-27°C).
- Avoid: Cold drafts, temperatures below 60°F (15°C), and exposure to heaters or air conditioners.

Soil
- Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.

Fertilizing

- Frequency: Fertilize every 4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Type: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Avoid: Fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows.

Pruning
- Prune away any yellow, brown, or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy.
- Use clean scissors to trim leaves at the base, ensuring the cut is neat and avoiding any damage to the remaining healthy foliage.

Repotting
- When: Every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
- How: Choose a pot that is one size larger and refresh the soil with fresh potting mix to promote healthy growth.

Pests and Problems
- Pests: Calatheas are prone to pests such as spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Check the undersides of leaves regularly and use insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
- Leaf Curling or Browning: This can occur due to underwatering, low humidity, or exposure to chemicals in tap water. Adjust care as needed.
- Yellowing Leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage can lead to yellow leaves. Make sure the pot has drainage holes and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings.

Toxicity
- Non-toxic: Calathea Corona is safe for pets and children, making it an excellent choice for households with animals or kids.

Cleaning
- Gently wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and keep the plant’s foliage vibrant and healthy.

Dormancy

- In the winter, Calatheas tend to enter a dormant period with slower growth. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing during this time, resuming normal care in the spring.
