Prayer Plant
Maranta leuconeura,Herringbone Plant
The Prayer Plant is a low-growing, spreading tropical perennial native to the rainforests of Brazil. It is famous for its unique leaf movement, where the leaves lie flat during the day and fold upward at night, resembling hands folded in prayer (hence the name). The oval leaves are beautifully patterned, typically featuring light green, velvety centers, darker green margins, and striking reddish-purple undersides. It is an excellent trailing or spreading houseplant that can produce small, white, insignificant flowers. It is non-toxic and valued for its foliage.
Care Guide
LIGHT
- Prefers medium to low, indirect light. Naturally grows on the rainforest floor.
- An East or North-facing window is ideal.
- Avoid direct sunlight, which will bleach the color out of the leaves and cause leaf scorch.
- Insufficient light will lead to sparse, slow growth and less vibrant color.
WATER
- Prefers the soil to remain consistently moist but never soggy or waterlogged.
- Water thoroughly when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch.
- Underwatering causes the leaves to curl and turn brown and crispy, especially on the edges.
- Use distilled, filtered, or rainwater, as it is highly sensitive to the chlorine and mineral salts in tap water.
SOIL
- Needs a rich, well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix that retains moisture.
- A blend of standard potting soil with generous peat moss or coco coir and a small amount of perlite is ideal.
GROWTH HABIT
- Ideal conditions: High humidity (50-60%+ is mandatory), warm temperatures (65-80F), and no cold drafts.
- Growth rate & size: Growth rate is moderate. It grows as a low, spreading, clumping, or slightly trailing plant, typically remaining under 12 inches in height.
PROPAGATING
- Propagates easily by stem cuttings or by division of the root ball when repotting.
- For cuttings, cut a stem with a node and an aerial root, and root in water or moist soil.
- Division is the fastest way to get a new full plant; simply separate a clump of stems with their own roots.
PRUNING
- Pruning is necessary to maintain a dense, bushy appearance.
- Pinch or cut back the long, leggy stems above a leaf node frequently.
- Remove old, yellowed, or damaged leaves at the base.
REPOTTING
- Repot when the plant is root-bound, typically every 1-2 years due to its clumping habit.
- Repot in spring or early summer.
- Use a shallow pot that is only slightly larger than the current root mass, as they have shallow root systems.
FERTILIZING
- Feed lightly during the spring and summer growing season (monthly).
- Use a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause fertilizer burn and brown tips.
FLOWERING
- Produces small, white, inconspicuous flowers on thin spikes.
- The flowers are not showy and are often clipped off to conserve energy for foliage growth.
TOXICITY
- Prayer Plants are generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, making them a safe choice.
PRO TIPS
- Brown, crispy leaf tips are the #1 sign of low humidity or mineral/salt buildup from tap water/fertilizer. Use a humidifier and pure water.
- Misting helps but is often insufficient; pebble trays or grouping plants is better.
- The leaves lying flat vs. upright at night indicates the plant is healthy.
Variability in Care
Most varieties of this plant follow the standard care above, but some require adjustments.
Red Vein Prayer Plant
Examples: Maranta leuconeura 'Erythroneura'
- This is the most common variety, featuring the prominent red veins on the top side.
- Requires good indirect light to keep the red veins vibrant.
Green Prayer Plant
Examples: Maranta leuconeura 'Kerchoveana' (Rabbit's Foot)
- Features dark green blotches on a light green base, often without the heavy red veining.
- More tolerant of lower light conditions than the red-veined types, as it has more chlorophyll.
Black/Silver Vein Varieties
Examples: Less common ornamental cultivars.
- The dark coloration is best maintained under consistent, medium indirect light.
- These types can be more sensitive to excessively bright light, which can cause the dark colors to fade.
