Croton
Codiaeum variegatum,Variegated Croton, Garden Croton
Crotons are tropical evergreen shrubs native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, widely celebrated for their incredibly colorful and varied foliage. Their leaves are typically thick, leathery, and glossy, displaying stunning mixes of yellow, orange, red, pink, and dark purple. The colors are highly dependent on the amount of light the plant receives. While they can produce small, inconspicuous white or yellow flowers on a drooping raceme, they are exclusively grown indoors for their decorative leaves. Popular cultivated varieties include 'Petra', 'Excellent', and 'Mammy'.
Care Guide
LIGHT
- Requires extremely bright light to develop and maintain vibrant leaf colors.
- Needs several hours of direct morning sun or filtered light in a South or West-facing window.
- In lower light, new growth will be solid green, and the colorful lower leaves may drop.
WATER
- Prefers consistent, even moisture. Do not let the soil dry out completely or remain soggy.
- Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.
- Overwatering causes root rot and leaf drop, while underwatering causes leaves to become limp and drop.
- Use lukewarm water to avoid shocking the roots.
SOIL
- Needs a rich, well-draining potting mix that retains moisture without compacting.
- A blend of standard potting soil, perlite, and a little peat moss or coco coir is ideal.
GROWTH HABIT
- Ideal conditions: High humidity (60% or more), consistent warm temperatures (70-85F), and bright light.
- Growth rate & size: Growth rate is moderate during the growing season. It grows as an upright, bushy shrub, reaching 3-6 feet tall indoors.
PROPAGATING
- Propagated easily from stem tip cuttings taken in spring or summer.
- Take a cutting 4-6 inches long with several leaves, remove the lower leaves, and root in water or moist potting mix.
- Place the cutting in a warm, humid spot for the best chance of rooting.
PRUNING
- Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and maintain a desired shape.
- Pinch or cut just above a leaf node.
- If the plant becomes leggy, hard pruning can be done in the spring.
REPOTTING
- Repot when the plant is root-bound, typically every 2-3 years.
- Repot in the spring or early summer.
- Use a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one to prevent overwatering.
FERTILIZING
- Feed regularly during the spring and summer growing season (every 4-6 weeks).
- Use a balanced, slow-release granule or liquid houseplant fertilizer.
- Stop fertilizing in the fall and winter.
FLOWERING
- Produces small, inconspicuous white or yellow flowers on a long spike.
- The flowers are not showy, and they are sometimes pinched off to conserve energy for the foliage.
TOXICITY
- Toxic to humans and pets. The plant contains a milky sap (latex) that can cause skin irritation, and all parts, especially the seeds, are poisonous if ingested, causing vomiting and diarrhea.
PRO TIPS
- Crotons are extremely sensitive to changes in environment; if you move them, expect some temporary leaf drop.
- Misting and high humidity are critical to prevent spider mites, which Crotons are highly prone to.
- Avoid cold drafts and temperature drops below 60F, which will cause leaves to fall off.
Variability in Care
Most varieties of this plant follow the standard care above, but some require adjustments.
Broad-Leaved Cultivars
Examples: 'Petra', 'Gold Star'
- Have large, wide, and often lobed leaves with vibrant, distinct color patterns.
- Are generally less prone to drying out quickly than narrow-leaved types.
- Need ample space to prevent the large leaves from being damaged or crushed.
Narrow/Corkscrew-Leaved Cultivars
Examples: 'Mammy', 'Spirale', 'Dreadlocks'
- Feature long, thin, often twisted or corkscrewed leaves.
- Require slightly higher humidity to keep the thinner leaf tissue from drying out and turning brown.
- Pruning is less about shaping and more about removing damaged tips.
Oak Leaf/Three-Lobed Cultivars
Examples: 'Oakleaf', 'Revolutions'
- Leaves resemble oak tree leaves with three distinct lobes.
- May be more tolerant of slightly lower light than some intensely variegated varieties, but colors will still be best in bright light.
- Tend to have a more compact, rounded shape than the tall, cane-like varieties.
