Coffee Plant
Coffea Arabica,Coffee Plant, Arabian Coffee
Coffea arabica is a beautiful, glossy-leaved evergreen shrub native to the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia. It is the world's primary source of coffee beans, accounting for the vast majority of global coffee production. Indoors, it grows as an elegant, upright miniature tree with deeply ridged, dark green leaves that feature a striking mirror-like sheen. While it is highly prized as an attractive, architectural foliage plant for bright indoor spaces, mature specimens can produce fragrant white blossoms followed by the iconic green "cherries" that slowly ripen to a deep crimson red.
Care Guide
LIGHT
- Requires bright, indirect light to thrive and sustain its vigorous foliage growth.
- Can tolerate a small amount of direct morning sun, but intense, direct afternoon sunlight will quickly scorch and bleach the glossy leaves.
- In low light, growth will stall completely, the stems will become leggy, and it will shed its lower leaves.
WATER
- Prefers to stay consistently moist but never waterlogged.
- Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Coffee plants are incredibly expressive; they will dramatically wilt when dry but perk up rapidly after receiving a deep soak.
- Never allow the roots to sit in stagnant water, as they are highly susceptible to root rot.
SOIL
- Thrives in a rich, peat-based, and slightly acidic potting mix (pH 6.0–6.5).
- A blend of high-quality potting soil amended with plenty of peat moss and perlite or orchid bark mimics its native volcanic mountain soils, providing excellent moisture retention with sharp drainage.
GROWTH HABIT
- Ideal conditions: High humidity (50%+), stable temperatures (65–80°F), and protection from cold windows or artificial drafts.
- Growth rate & size: Slow to moderate grower indoors; it can easily be maintained as a compact shrub around 3–4 feet tall through intentional pruning, though it can eventually reach up to 6 feet.
PROPAGATING
- Can be propagated via stem cuttings or by planting fresh, unroasted green coffee seeds.
- Cuttings require high humidity, consistent moisture, and bottom heat to root successfully, making them somewhat challenging to propagate outside of a greenhouse setting.
PRUNING
- Responds exceptionally well to pruning, which is essential for maintaining a bushy, compact shape.
- Pinch back the growing tips in spring to encourage lateral branching rather than a single tall trunk.
- Always prune away any dead, brown, or lower yellow leaves to maintain optimal air circulation through the canopy.
REPOTTING
- Repot every 1–2 years in the spring, moving up only one pot size at a time.
- Coffee plants have extensive root systems and will quickly become root-bound, which slows their growth and causes them to dry out much faster.
FERTILIZING
- Feed every 2–4 weeks during the spring and summer growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half-strength.
- A fertilizer formulated specifically for acid-loving plants (like citrus or gardenias) can help maintain the ideal soil pH. Avoid feeding in the winter.
FLOWERING
- Produces small, star-shaped white flowers that grow in clusters along the leaf axils.
- The blooms carry a strong, sweet fragrance reminiscent of jasmine or orange blossoms, though flowering is relatively uncommon on indoor specimens under 3–4 years old.
TOXICITY
- Toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. While the ripe fruit flesh is technically non-toxic, the leaves, stems, and especially the seeds (coffee beans) contain high concentrations of caffeine, which can cause serious toxicity if ingested.
PRO TIPS
- Humidity is Non-Negotiable: If the air is too dry, the leaf tips will turn brown and crispy. Use a humidifier or group it tightly with other tropical plants to elevate the surrounding moisture.
- Leaf Dusting: The ultra-glossy leaves trap airborne dust easily. Wipe them down monthly with a soft, damp cloth to ensure the plant can efficiently absorb light and photosynthesize.
Variability in Care
Different variants and cultivars of Coffea arabica require specific modifications to their care routines.
Coffea Arabica 'Nana' (Dwarf Coffee Plant)
- A compact, slower-growing cultivar that naturally retains a dense, bushy shape and stays under 2 feet tall.
- Care Variant: This variant is much more sensitive to overwatering than the standard species due to its dense foliage and smaller, more compact root system. Ensure the top two inches of soil dry completely before watering.
Coffea Arabica 'Variegata'
- A rare and striking cultivar featuring patches of creamy-white or pale green variegation splashed across the glossy leaves.
- Care Variant: This variant requires significantly more light than the standard green type to maintain its coloration. Because the white sections lack chlorophyll, it grows much slower and is highly susceptible to leaf scorch if exposed to sudden direct sun.
Standard Tree Form (Coffea arabica)
- The classic, natural growth form trained to grow as a single-trunk miniature tree rather than a multi-stemmed bush.
- Care Variant: Requires a strict structural pruning variant; you must consistently remove any sucker growth emerging from the lower trunk or base to maintain the tree aesthetic and ensure the main canopy receives maximum energy.
