Scales
Coccoidea (Superfamily), Barnacle bugs, Shield bugs
Scale insects are unique because they often don't look like "bugs" at all, appearing instead as small, stationary bumps on stems or leaves. They are technically hemipterans that, once they find a feeding spot, often lose their legs and grow a protective shell-like covering. To the naked eye, they look like oval or round "scales" that can be scraped off with a fingernail.
Like mealybugs, they pierce the plant to suck out sap, leading to stunted growth, yellowing leaves, and the secretion of sticky honeydew. If left untreated, the "bumps" will multiply until they completely encrust the stems, effectively choking the plant's vascular system.
Variants
The primary "variants in care" for scale depend on the type of protective shell they grow, which dictates how they interact with the plant and which treatments will work.
Soft Scale (Coccidae)
These variants produce a waxy, cottony, or powdery cover that is actually part of their body. They are generally larger and more rounded (convex) than armored scales. Crucially, soft scale insects produce large amounts of honeydew, which makes the plant leaves feel sticky and often leads to black sooty mold. Because their "shell" is part of their body, they are slightly easier to kill with contact sprays like horticultural oils, as the oil can more easily penetrate their waxy coating.
Armored (Hard) Scale (Diaspididae)
Armored scales create a hard, detached, shield-like cover made of shed skins and wax that is not part of their actual body. They are typically flatter and smaller than soft scales. Unlike their soft cousins, armored scales do not produce honeydew, so you won't find sticky leaves or ants around them. This "armor" is a highly effective defense; contact sprays often slide right off the shell without hurting the insect underneath, making them much more difficult to eradicate with surface-level treatments.
Rehabilitation Instructions
Removal Instructions for Soft Scale
- Mechanical Removal: Scrape off visible scales with a toothbrush or cloth dipped in soapy water.
- Smothering Sprays: Use Neem oil or Horticultural oil. Because their "shell" is part of their soft body, these oils can penetrate and suffocate the insect more easily.
Removal Instructions for Armored Scale
- Alcohol Dabbing: Use a cotton swab soaked in 70% alcohol to dissolve the edges of the hard shell and kill the insect underneath.
- Systemic Soil Drench: Because the "armored" shell protects them from contact sprays, a systemic insecticide (like Imidacloprid) is necessary. The plant absorbs it, and the scale dies when it drinks the treated sap.
