Fungal diseases are the most frequent issues for indoor plants, usually thriving in high humidity with poor airflow. They appear as fuzzy coatings, circular brown spots with yellow halos, or mushy, blackened stems. Unlike pests, fungi spread via microscopic spores that can travel through the air or reside in the soil. They harm the plant by blocking photosynthesis (on leaves) or decaying the vascular system (in roots), eventually causing the plant to collapse.

Variants

Variants: Topical vs. Systemic Fungi

  • Topical Variant (Powdery Mildew/Rust): These live on the surface of the leaf. They are visible as white "flour" or orange dust. They are easier to treat because they sit on the exterior.
  • Systemic Variant (Root Rot/Vascular Wilt): These live inside the plant's tissue or root system. By the time you see the symptoms (wilting, black mushy stems), the internal damage is often severe.

Rehabilitation Instructions

For Topical Fungi:

  • Airflow & Isolation: Move the plant to a spot with better circulation and lower humidity.
  • Fungicidal Spray: Use a copper-based fungicide or a sulfur spray to kill surface spores.
  • Baking Soda Rinse: A mix of 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon liquid soap, and 1 gallon of water can alter the pH of the leaf surface, making it uninhabitable for fungi.

For Systemic/Root Fungi:

  • The "Surgery": Remove the plant from the pot, cut away all mushy, black roots with sterilized shears, and repot in fresh, dry soil.
  • Hydrogen Peroxide Drench: Water with a 1:4 ratio of peroxide to water to kill soil-borne pathogens and deliver oxygen to suffocating roots.
