Aphids

Aphididae (Family), Plant lice, Greenfly, Blackfly

Aphids are small, pear-shaped insects with soft bodies and long antennae, often appearing in clusters of green, black, or red "bubbles" on new growth. They are easily identified by two small "tailpipes" (cornicles) on their rear and their ability to reproduce rapidly without mating.

By piercing the plant's phloem to suck out sap, they cause new leaves to emerge twisted, yellowed, or puckered. Their feeding produces a sticky "honeydew" that attracts ants and promotes black sooty mold growth. Beyond physical exhaustion of the plant, aphids are dangerous vectors that frequently transmit systemic viruses from one plant to another.

Variants

Wingless Variant (Founders)

  • Location: Found in stationary, dense clusters on stems and leaf undersides.
  • Impact: These are the primary feeders that focus entirely on rapid reproduction, draining the host plant's energy and causing localized leaf deformation.

Winged Variant (Migrators)

  • Location: Found among the clusters or flying between plants.
  • Impact: Produced when a plant becomes overcrowded or unhealthy, these migrators allow the infestation to "jump" across a room to colonize new, healthy hosts.

Rehabilitation Instructions

  • Manual High-Pressure Spray: Use a strong stream of water to physically blast the aphids off the plant; their weak bodies and grip mean they rarely survive or find their way back.
  • Soap & Oil Sprays: Thoroughly coat the plant with insecticidal soap or Neem oil, focusing on the undersides of leaves and new growth tips to suffocate the soft-bodied insects.
  • Alcohol Spot Treatment: Dab visible clusters with a cotton swab dipped in 70% Isopropyl alcohol to kill them instantly on contact.
  • Pruning: Snip off and discard heavily infested flower buds or new leaf tips to remove the bulk of the colony in one step.
  • Biological Control: Introduce natural predators like Ladybugs or Lacewings, which will hunt down both winged and wingless variants in hard-to-reach crevices.
