Baby tears plant, also called angel's tears, is a mat-forming tropical perennial with myriad tiny leaves.
Lighting
• Prefers bright, indirect light. Place it near a north or east-facing window.
• Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. It can tolerate lower light but will grow more slowly.
Temperature
• Thrives in temperatures between 65–75°F.
• Avoid temperatures below 50°F and sudden temperature fluctuations, which can stress the plant.
Watering
• Baby’s tears love moisture and requires consistently damp soil. Water when the top layer of soil feels slightly dry.
• Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can cause wilting. However, ensure that it has good drainage to prevent root rot.
Humidity
• High humidity is essential. Mist the plant regularly or use a humidity tray, especially in dry indoor environments.
• Bathrooms or kitchens can be ideal locations due to higher humidity levels.
Soil
• Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mix that retains moisture but drains well is ideal, as it helps keep the roots moist but not waterlogged.
Fertilizing
• Fertilize monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.
• Reduce feeding during fall and winter when growth naturally slows.
Pruning
• Baby’s tears can grow quickly and may need regular trimming to keep it neat and prevent it from becoming too dense. Simply trim back overgrown areas to encourage bushier growth.
Repotting
• Repot every 1–2 years or when it outgrows its pot. Choose a shallow container, as the roots are not very deep.
Propagation
• This plant is easy to propagate. Simply take a small section and place it on moist soil; it will root quickly.
Common Problems
• Yellowing Leaves: Usually indicates overwatering or insufficient light.
• Browning Edges: Often due to low humidity or inconsistent watering.
• Pests: While generally pest-free, watch for aphids or spider mites, which can occasionally appear.
