Selaginella Moss 6"

Selaginella Moss 6"

Light:

Bright, indirect light is ideal for Selaginella moss. It can tolerate low light, but it prefers brighter conditions to thrive.

Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate leaves.

 Watering:

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top layer of soil feels dry to the touch.

Selaginella is sensitive to drought; if allowed to dry out completely, it can quickly die back.

 Soil:

Use a light, well-draining potting mix that retains moisture. A mix designed for ferns or a combination of peat moss and perlite works well.

Good drainage is important to prevent root rot.

Temperature:

Selaginella moss thrives in temperatures between 60-75°F

Protect it from extreme temperature fluctuations and cold drafts.

Humidity:

This plant loves high humidity. Ideally, humidity levels should be between 50% and 70%.

To increase humidity, consider misting the leaves regularly, placing the plant on a pebble tray filled with water, or using a humidifier.

 Fertilizing:

Fertilize sparingly, if at all. If you choose to fertilize, use a diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when growth slows.

 Pruning and Maintenance:

Trim back any dead or brown foliage to encourage new growth and maintain a tidy appearance.

Selaginella can spread over time, so you may need to control its growth if it gets too large.

Repotting:

Repot every 1-2 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use fresh, moist potting mix when repotting.

The best time to repot is in the spring when the plant is actively growing.

Propagation:

Selaginella can be propagated by division or by taking cuttings. When dividing, ensure each section has roots and some foliage.

You can also propagate using spores, but this method requires more specialized care and conditions.

Pests:

Selaginella is generally resistant to pests, but keep an eye out for mealybugs or fungus gnats. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Good air circulation can help prevent pest issues.

Toxicity:

Selaginella is generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans, making it a safe choice for households with animals or children.
