The Schefflera arboricola, also known as the dwarf umbrella tree, is such a fun and bushy plant. ☂️🌿 It's popular for its glossy, umbrella-like leaves and is pretty chill to care for — perfect for adding a tropical vibe without too much fuss.
-
Bright, indirect light is best. It’ll grow fuller and faster!
-
Can tolerate lower light, but might get leggy.
-
Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves, especially in hot windows.
💧 Water
-
Let the top 2 inches of soil dry out before watering.
-
They like moisture but hate sitting in soggy soil.
-
In winter, cut back on watering — they rest a bit during the colder months.
Warning signs:
-
Yellowing leaves = overwatered
-
Crispy brown leaves = underwatered or dry air
🌱 Soil
-
Loves well-draining potting mix. A general indoor mix with some added perlite or bark is perfect.
-
Drainage is key — soggy roots lead to root rot real quick.
🪴 Potting
-
Pot with drainage holes is a must.
-
Repot every 2–3 years, or when you see roots poking out the bottom.
-
Can be pruned to keep it bushy and shaped how you like!
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives in 65–75°F (18–24°C).
-
Doesn't love the cold — avoid drafts and keep above 55°F (13°C).
-
Appreciates moderate humidity — a pebble tray or light misting is helpful if your air is super dry.
✂️ Pruning & Shaping
-
Regular pruning keeps it full and compact.
-
Cut back any leggy stems or uneven growth — it bounces back quickly!
-
You can even grow it as a small tree or a bushy table plant depending on how you prune.
🌼 Fertilizer
-
Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer (like 10-10-10) once a month in spring and summer.
-
No need to fertilize in the fall or winter.
🐛 Pests
-
Watch for spider mites, scale, and mealybugs.
-
Wipe leaves occasionally with a damp cloth and treat pests with neem oil or insecticidal soap if needed.
