Red Butterfly Begonia 4”
Red Butterfly Begonia 4”
Lighting
• Prefers bright, indirect light to maintain vibrant foliage color. An east or west-facing window works well.
• Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves, but ensure it gets enough light to prevent legginess and to encourage blooming.
Temperature
• Ideal temperature is between 65–75°F (18–24°C).
• It can tolerate slightly cooler temperatures but avoid anything below 55°F (13°C) as it’s sensitive to cold.
Watering
• Water when the top inch of soil is dry. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, as overwatering can lead to root rot.
• Reduce watering in winter when the plant’s growth slows, but don’t let the soil dry out completely.
Humidity
• Red butterfly begonias prefer moderate to high humidity. Aim for 50% or higher.
• Use a humidity tray, mist lightly, or place it in a humid room (like a bathroom) to keep it happy, especially in dry environments.
Soil
• Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix. A mix of potting soil with perlite or sand works well to prevent water retention issues.
• A soil that retains some moisture but drains well is best to avoid soggy roots.
Fertilizing
• Fertilize every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.
• Stop fertilizing in the winter when the plant is resting.
Pruning
• Prune off any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking tidy and encourage bushier growth.
• Pinch back stems to help the plant maintain a compact, bushy shape.
Repotting
• Repot every 1–2 years, ideally in the spring. Choose a pot slightly larger than the current one to allow room for growth.
• Ensure the new pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Propagation
• Propagate by leaf or stem cuttings. Place cuttings in water or soil, and keep them warm and humid until they develop roots.
Common Problems
• Yellowing Leaves: Often due to overwatering or poor drainage.
• Leaf Drop: Can occur due to sudden temperature changes or low humidity.
• Pests: Watch for pests like spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs. Regularly inspect the leaves, especially the undersides, to catch pests early.
