Sarracenia variety available.
Light
- Sarracenia (North American Pitcher Plants): Need full sun (6+ hours per day) for strong pitcher growth.
Watering
- Use distilled, rainwater, or reverse osmosis water only (tap water contains minerals that can harm the plant).
- Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
- Sarracenia: Use the tray method (keep the pot in a shallow tray of water)
- Never let the soil dry out completely.
Humidity & Temperature
- Sarracenia: Adapt to lower humidity but grow best in 50-70%
Soil & Potting
- Use well-draining, nutrient-poor soil (do not use regular potting mix). A good mix includes:
- 1:1 sphagnum moss and perlite OR
- Peat moss, perlite, and sand (for Sarracenia).
- Use plastic or glazed ceramic pots with drainage holes. Avoid clay pots (they can leach minerals into the soil).
Feeding
- Do not fertilize with regular plant food.
- Pitcher plants catch their own prey, but if kept indoors, you can feed them small insects (e.g., fruit flies, ants, or small crickets) every few weeks.
- Avoid overfeeding—1-2 bugs per month is enough.
Dormancy (For Sarracenia & Some Heliamphora)
- Sarracenia requires a winter dormancy (temperatures around 35-50°F for 3-4 months). Reduce watering and allow the plant to rest.
Pruning & Maintenance
- Trim dead or dried pitchers to encourage new growth.
- If pitchers aren’t forming, increase light and humidity.
- Mist the plant occasionally if humidity is low (especially for Nepenthes and Heliamphora).
