This tropical beauty is known for its unique, fuzzy red stems and deeply lobed leaves.
🌞 Light
Your Philodendron Squamiferum prefers bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, while too little light may hinder growth. An east or west-facing window with filtered light is ideal.
💧 Watering
Water your plant when the top few inches of soil feel dry. Stick your finger into the soil to check—if it's dry up to your second knuckle, it's time to water. Ensure excess water drains out to prevent root rot, and never let the pot sit in standing water.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
This tropical plant thrives in temperatures between 50°F and 75°F. It also enjoys high humidity—think 60% or more. If your home is on the drier side, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant near other humidity-loving plants to create a microclimate.
🪴 Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining potting mix. A blend of equal parts orchid bark, perlite, and peaty soil works well. Repot every few years or when the plant's roots outgrow the pot. Signs it's time to repot include roots growing out of the drainage holes or the plant becoming top-heavy.
🌿 Fertilizer
Feed twice a month during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Hold off on fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant's growth slows down.
✂️ Pruning & Propagation
Prune your plant to maintain its shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing leaves as needed. You can propagate through stem cuttings during the growing season.
🐛 Pests & Problems
Keep an eye out for common pests like spider mites and fungus gnats. If you spot any, gently remove them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or use insecticidal soap. Yellowing leaves may indicate overwatering, while brown tips can be a sign of low humidity.
