The Philodendron mexicanum is a rare but gorgeous vining aroid with dramatic, lobed leaves that can grow quite large over time. It’s known for its elongated, “dog-ear” shaped leaves with a velvety texture and sometimes reddish undersides. It’s a climber, so it loves to stretch up with support.
Light:
- Thrives in bright, indirect light.
- Can tolerate lower light but may get leggy and grow slower.
- Avoid direct sunlight — it can scorch the leaves.
Water:
- Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil are dry.
- In general, every 7–10 days during growing season, and less in winter.
- Avoid soggy soil — root rot is the enemy.
Humidity:
- Loves higher humidity (60%+), but can adapt to average household humidity.
- Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants if air is dry.
Soil:
- Needs a well-aerated, chunky aroid mix.
- Mix suggestion: orchid bark, perlite, peat or coco coir, and a bit of potting soil.
Temperature:
- Prefers temps between 65–85°F
- Avoid cold drafts and temps below 55°F
Fertilizer:
- Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.
- Reduce feeding in fall/winter when growth slows.
Support:
- It’s a climber! Give it a moss pole or stake to encourage larger, more mature leaves.
Propagation:
- Easy to propagate via stem cuttings in water or moss/perlite.
- Just be sure each cutting has at least one node.
