Light
- Prefers shade to partial shade outdoors. Indoors, place it in a spot with indirect light; avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the delicate fronds.
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Let the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings.
- Water less in the winter, as the plant's growth slows during this time.
Humidity
- Thrives in high humidity. Mist the leaves regularly or use a pebble tray with water if the air in your home is dry.
Temperature
- Loves temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C). Protect it from frost and cold drafts, as it's not tolerant of freezing temperatures.
Soil
- Use a rich, well-draining soil mix. A combination of peat-based potting soil with some perlite works well.
Fertilizer
- Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Skip fertilizing in the fall and winter.
Pruning
- Remove yellowed or damaged fronds to keep the plant looking neat and encourage new growth.
Repotting
- Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a pot with good drainage and avoid over-potting, as too much space can lead to soggy soil.
Pests and Diseases
- Generally pest-resistant, but watch out for scale insects or spider mites in dry conditions. Treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
- Prevent fungal issues by avoiding overwatering and ensuring good airflow.
Outdoor Care
- If grown outdoors, Leatherleaf ferns make excellent ground cover in shaded, woodland gardens.
- Mulch around the base to help retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Propagation
- Propagate by division in early spring. Gently separate the root ball into smaller sections and replant.
