Goldfish Plant 6"

Goldfish Plant 6"

Light:

Goldfish plants thrive in bright, indirect light. They can tolerate some direct morning sunlight, but avoid intense, midday sun as it may scorch the leaves.

If the plant doesn’t get enough light, it may not flower. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or you can use artificial grow lights.

Watering:

Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Goldfish plants prefer to stay evenly moist but not waterlogged.

Avoid letting the soil completely dry out or allowing the plant to sit in water, as this can cause root rot.

Reduce watering slightly in the winter when the plant’s growth slows down.

Humidity:

Goldfish plants thrive in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels above 50%.

Mist the plant regularly, place it on a humidity tray, or use a humidifier, especially during the winter or in dry environments.

Temperature:

The ideal temperature for goldfish plants is between 65°F and 75°F (18°C to 24°C).

Keep them away from cold drafts, heating vents, and sudden temperature fluctuations, as they are sensitive to extremes.

Soil:

Use a well-draining, lightweight potting mix. A mix designed for African violets works well, as it promotes good aeration and drainage.

Fertilizer:

Feed your goldfish plant during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength every 2-4 weeks.

Stop fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.

Pruning:

Regular pruning encourages a fuller, bushier plant and can increase flowering. Trim back any leggy growth or remove dead stems and leaves.

After flowering, lightly trim the plant to shape it.

Repotting:

Repot your goldfish plant every 2-3 years or when it becomes root-bound. Use a pot that is only slightly larger than the current one, as these plants prefer slightly cramped conditions.

Spring is the best time to repot.

Pest Control:

Watch for common houseplant pests like aphids, spider mites, and mealybugs. Wipe the leaves regularly and inspect the plant for any signs of infestation.

Treat pests with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.

Flowering:

Goldfish plants typically bloom in the warmer months. To encourage flowering, make sure it receives enough bright light and humidity, and feed it during the growing season.

Deadhead (remove) spent flowers to encourage more blooms.
