🌿 Overview

  • Botanical Name: Ficus microcarpa 'Moclame'

  • Common Names: Ficus Moclame, Laurel Fig

  • Family: Moraceae

  • Appearance: Compact growth habit with rounded, glossy green leaves; more refined and symmetrical than other ficus varieties like the Fiddle Leaf or Benjamina

  • Growth: Can reach 3–6 feet indoors

☀️ Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.

  • Tolerates some direct morning sun, but harsh afternoon sun can scorch leaves.

  • Can adapt to medium light, though growth may slow and leaves may drop.

💧 Watering

  • Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry.

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.

  • Avoid overwatering—this ficus is sensitive to root rot.

  • Reduce watering slightly in winter.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal range: 65–80°F.

  • Avoid cold drafts and temps below 55°F.

  • Prefers moderate to high humidity. Consider a pebble tray or occasional misting in dry environments.

🌱 Soil

  • Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally with a bit of perlite or sand for aeration.

  • A standard houseplant mix or ficus/citrus mix works well.

🌸 Fertilizer

  • Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer.

  • Cut back in fall and skip in winter.

✂️ Pruning & Maintenance

  • Prune to shape and encourage bushier growth.

  • Remove dead, yellowing, or damaged leaves as needed.

  • Wipe leaves occasionally to keep them glossy and dust-free.

🪴 Repotting

  • Repot every 2–3 years, or when the roots outgrow the pot.

  • Use a slightly larger pot with good drainage.

🐛 Pests & Problems

  • Common pests: Spider mites, scale, mealybugs, and aphids.

  • Treat with neem oil, insecticidal soap, or a strong shower spray.

  • Leaf drop is common if the plant is moved suddenly, under-watered, or exposed to cold drafts or low humidity.

🧪 Toxicity

  • Toxic to pets and humans if ingested.

  • Sap may cause skin irritation.

🌱 Propagation

  • Can be propagated via stem cuttings, but it’s slow to root.

  • Use rooting hormone and place cuttings in water or moist soil.
