Farfugium Japonicum “Tractor Seat” 10”
Farfugium Japonicum “Tractor Seat” 10”
Light:
- • Prefers partial to full shade.
- • Can tolerate morning sun but avoid intense afternoon sun, which can scorch its delicate leaves.
- • Ideal for shaded gardens or as an indoor plant in indirect light.
Watering:
- • Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the growing season (spring through summer).
- • It prefers moist environments but is sensitive to overwatering, so make sure the soil has good drainage.
- • Water less in the winter when growth slows down.
Soil:
- • Well-draining, rich soil is best. A mix with compost or organic material works well to retain moisture without becoming waterlogged.
- • It can tolerate clay soils as long as there is good drainage.
Temperature & Humidity:
- • Thrives in cooler temperatures ranging from 50°F to 75°F
- • It is hardy in USDA zones 7-10 but may need protection in colder climates.
- • Prefers humid environments, making it an excellent plant for regions with high humidity or indoor areas with moderate humidity.
Fertilizer:
- • During the growing season, feed monthly with a balanced fertilizer to encourage lush foliage and blooms.
- • Fertilize sparingly in winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Pruning & Maintenance:
- • Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant looking tidy.
- • Prune spent flowers after blooming to encourage more growth.
Pests & Diseases:
- • Leopard Plants can be susceptible to slugs, snails, and aphids. Use organic or chemical pest control methods as needed.
- • Keep an eye out for fungal diseases, especially in very humid or poorly drained areas.
Winter Care:
- • In colder climates, mulch around the base to protect the roots from freezing temperatures.
- • If growing in containers, you can move the plant indoors during the winter to protect it from frost.
Propagation:
- • Divide clumps in early spring or autumn to propagate. Simply split the root ball and replant each section in a suitable spot.
Flowers:
- • In late fall, Farfugium japonicum produces yellow daisy-like flowers. While the foliage is the main attraction, these blooms add a seasonal burst of color.
