Dracaena Giganta 10”
Dracaena Giganta 10”
Light:
• Bright, indirect light is ideal for Dracaena giganta. It can tolerate low light but may not grow as vigorously or produce as many leaves.
• Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering:
• Allow the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry out before watering. Dracaena giganta prefers to be on the drier side, so avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.
• Water less frequently in the winter when the plant is dormant.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining potting mix. A standard houseplant mix combined with perlite or sand for better drainage is recommended.
• Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.
Temperature:
• Dracaena giganta thrives in warm temperatures between 65-80°F
• Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 50°F
Humidity:
• This plant prefers moderate humidity but can adapt to average household levels.
• If the air is particularly dry (especially in winter), consider misting the leaves or using a humidifier to increase humidity.
Fertilizing:
• Fertilize with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
• Reduce fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows down.
Pruning and Maintenance:
• Remove any dead or yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy and maintain its appearance.
• You can also trim back any leggy growth to encourage a fuller shape.
Repotting:
• Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Choose a slightly larger pot with fresh potting mix.
• The best time to repot is in the spring when the plant is actively growing.
Propagation:
• Dracaena giganta can be propagated through stem cuttings. Take a cutting from a healthy plant, let it callous over for a few days, and then place it in water or moist soil until roots develop.
Pests:
• Keep an eye out for common pests such as spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
• Ensure good air circulation around the plant to help prevent pest problems.
Toxicity:
• Dracaena giganta is toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep the plant out of reach of curious pets and children.
