Calathea Green Goddess 6"

Calathea Green Goddess 6"

Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light. A spot near an east-facing window is ideal.
  • Avoid direct sunlight, as it can cause the leaves to scorch or fade.
  • It can tolerate lower light levels, but growth may slow.

Watering

  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but not soggy. Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out slightly before watering again.
  • Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater if possible—Calatheas are sensitive to chemicals like fluoride and chlorine found in tap water.
  • Water less frequently during winter but never let the soil dry out completely.

Humidity

  • Calatheas thrive in high humidity (above 50%).
  • Use a humidifier, or place your plant on a tray of pebbles filled with water to increase humidity.
  • Grouping plants together can also help maintain a humid environment.

Temperature

  • Loves a warm environment (65–80°F / 18–27°C).
  • Keep away from cold drafts, heaters, or air conditioners, as sudden temperature changes can stress the plant.

Soil

  • Use a well-draining, light soil mix, such as a blend of potting soil, coco coir, and perlite.
  • A mix that retains some moisture while allowing for drainage is perfect.

Fertilizer

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced houseplant fertilizer.
  • Stop feeding in fall and winter when the plant’s growth slows.

Pruning

  • Remove any yellowing or crispy leaves with clean scissors to keep the plant looking fresh and healthy.
  • Pruning also encourages new growth.

Repotting

  • Repot every 1–2 years in spring if the plant becomes root-bound or if the soil quality has degraded.
  • Always use a pot with drainage holes to avoid waterlogging.

Common Issues

  1. Crispy Leaf Edges or Tips? Likely due to low humidity or using tap water. Increase humidity and switch to distilled/filtered water.
  2. Yellowing Leaves? Could be overwatering—make sure the soil isn’t waterlogged and that the pot has good drainage.
  3. Faded or Curled Leaves? Often a sign of too much direct sunlight or low humidity. Adjust the environment accordingly.

Pet Safety

  • Great news: Calatheas are non-toxic to pets, so they’re safe around curious cats and dogs.

Bonus Tips

  • Dust the Leaves: Keep the leaves clean by gently wiping them with a damp cloth. This helps the plant absorb more light and stay healthy.
  • Rotate the Pot: Turn the pot every week or two to ensure even growth, as Calatheas tend to lean toward the light.
