Alocasia Silver Dragon 6"
Alocasia Silver Dragon 6"
Light:
• Bright, Indirect Light: Alocasia Silver Dragon thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, but too little light can cause slower growth and leaf loss.
• Avoid Low Light: While it can tolerate lower light conditions, it will not thrive or show its best colors in dim environments.
Watering:
• Keep Soil Moist, Not Soggy: Alocasia prefers consistently moist soil, but it should never be waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but ensure the plant has good drainage to prevent root rot.
• Water Less in Winter: During the winter months, when the plant is not actively growing, reduce watering to prevent overwatering.
Humidity:
• High Humidity: Alocasia Silver Dragon loves high humidity levels, ideally around 60-80%. If the air is too dry, the leaves can develop brown edges or tips.
• Boost Humidity: Increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, placing it on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier. Bathrooms and kitchens with higher humidity can also be great spots for this plant.
Temperature:
• Warm Temperatures: Alocasia prefers warm temperatures between 65-80°F. It is sensitive to cold drafts and should be kept away from temperatures below 60°F
• Avoid Cold Drafts: Keep the plant away from air conditioners, cold windows, or any area with cold drafts.
Soil:
• Well-Draining Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix with a balance of moisture retention and aeration. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and a bit of orchid bark or coco coir works well to allow proper drainage.
• Good Drainage: Make sure the pot has drainage holes to prevent water from sitting at the bottom and causing root rot.
Fertilizing:
• Feed During the Growing Season: Fertilize your Alocasia every 4-6 weeks during the spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer.
• No Fertilizer in Winter: Avoid fertilizing in the winter when the plant is not actively growing.
Pruning:
• Remove Dead Leaves: Alocasia naturally sheds older leaves as new ones emerge. Remove yellow or dying leaves to keep the plant healthy and looking fresh.
• Maintain Shape: Prune the plant lightly if necessary to control its size and encourage healthy growth.
Repotting:
• Repot Every 1-2 Years: Repot your Alocasia Silver Dragon every 1-2 years or when it becomes root-bound. Spring is the best time to repot.
• Use a Pot Only Slightly Larger: Choose a pot that’s only slightly larger than the current one to avoid excess soil, which can retain too much water.
Dormancy:
• Winter Dormancy: Alocasia Silver Dragon may enter a dormant phase in winter, during which it can lose some or all of its leaves. This is normal. Reduce watering and allow the plant to rest. Once spring comes, new growth should emerge.
Pests:
• Watch for Pests: Common pests include spider mites, mealybugs, and aphids. Regularly check the undersides of the leaves, as the textured foliage can hide pests. If an infestation occurs, treat it with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
• Clean the Leaves: Wipe the leaves gently with a damp cloth to remove dust and discourage pests.
Toxicity:
• Toxic to Pets and Humans: Alocasia Silver Dragon is toxic if ingested, so keep it away from children and pets.
