The Adenium, also known as the Desert Rose—such a gorgeous, sculptural plant! It's like a little piece of the desert you can keep right on your windowsill. Whether you're already growing one or just thinking about getting one, here’s your complete care guide to keep that beauty thriving:
🌞 Light
Sun worshipper alert! Desert Rose loves bright light.
-
Indoors: Place it near the sunniest window you have—south or west-facing is best.
-
Outdoors: Full sun is ideal, at least 6 hours a day. Just ease it into direct sun if it's been inside for a while to prevent sunburn.
💧 Watering
This one's a bit like a succulent—it stores water in its thick trunk.
-
Growing season (spring/summer): Water thoroughly when the top inch or two of soil is dry.
-
Dormant season (fall/winter): Cut back significantly. Water just enough to keep the caudex (that bulbous trunk) from shriveling.
⚠️ Overwatering is the biggest killer. Always let the soil dry out between waterings.
🪴 Soil
Fast-draining is the name of the game!
-
Use cactus or succulent mix.
-
You can make your own: 1 part potting soil + 1 part perlite or coarse sand + optional pumice or gravel for extra drainage.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Loves heat: Ideal range is 65–90°F.
-
Cold-sensitive: Below 50°F bring it inside or protect it. Frost can be fatal.
-
Low humidity is totally fine—this plant thrives in dry air.
🌱 Fertilizer
-
During the growing season: Use a balanced liquid fertilizer (like 10-10-10) every 4–6 weeks.
-
Stop feeding in fall/winter when it’s not actively growing.
✂️ Pruning & Shaping
-
You can prune in early spring to shape it or encourage branching.
-
Use clean, sharp scissors or pruners. The sap is toxic, so wear gloves and avoid contact with skin or eyes.
🌸 Blooming
-
Flowers usually pop in warm weather and are super showy!
-
Needs good light and a bit of stress (like letting the soil dry out between waterings) to really bloom well.
🐛 Common Pests
Watch out for:
-
Spider mites
-
Mealybugs
-
Aphids
Wipe them off with a damp cloth or use insecticidal soap/neem oil if needed.
🧪 Toxicity
Yes, it’s toxic to pets and humans if ingested, and the sap can irritate skin. Keep it out of reach of curious kiddos and fur babies.
