Light:
• Succulents prefer bright, direct sunlight for at least 6 hours a day.
• Indoors, place them near a south- or east-facing window for optimal light exposure.
• If leaves start to stretch or lose their color, the plant may need more light.
Watering:
• Water sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, as succulents are drought-tolerant.
• Follow the “soak and dry” method: thoroughly water the soil and then wait until it’s completely dry before watering again.
• Reduce watering during the winter months when succulents are dormant and require less moisture.
Soil:
• Use a well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents.
• Avoid regular potting soil, which retains too much moisture and can lead to root rot.
• If making your own mix, combine regular potting soil with sand or perlite for better drainage.
Temperature:
• Succulents prefer warm temperatures between 60°F and 80°F
• Protect them from frost and freezing temperatures, as they are sensitive to cold.
• They can tolerate heat, but be mindful of direct sun exposure during hot afternoons, especially for certain varieties.
Humidity:
• Succulents thrive in dry conditions and don’t need high humidity.
• Keep them in areas with good airflow to prevent excess moisture around the leaves, which can cause rot.
Fertilizer:
• Fertilize succulents sparingly. Once or twice during the growing season (spring and summer) is usually sufficient.
• Use a diluted, balanced fertilizer or a fertilizer specifically formulated for cacti and succulents.
• Avoid fertilizing in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.
Containers & Drainage:
• Use containers with drainage holes to prevent water from accumulating at the bottom.
• If using decorative pots without drainage, be extra cautious with watering and consider placing the succulent in a smaller pot with drainage inside the decorative one.
Pests:
• Succulents are relatively pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs, aphids, or spider mites.
• If pests appear, wipe them off with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol or treat the plant with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
Pruning & Maintenance:
• Remove any dead or dry leaves at the base to encourage new growth and prevent pests.
• Succulents naturally lose their lower leaves as they grow, which is normal.
Propagation:
• Succulents are easy to propagate by leaf cuttings or offsets.
• Let the cutting dry for a few days to form a callus before placing it in well-draining soil.
